From time to time, I like to dig into a well written self-help book. Maybe it’s my psychology degree talking, but there are times when I could really use some inspiration and motivation. You know, those books that are all about finding and following your dreams, or discovering truths that were always there, but we’re too close to see them clearly. Spiritual guides in a way.
However, it’s difficult to find a book that is inspirational without it also being chock full of religious platitudes, which wouldn’t be inspirational at all to an atheist. There nearly almost always seems to be religious overtones. Just do a search for “inspirational” on Amazon and you’ll find most of the results are religious, Christian to be specific, in nature. I even found “inspirational” wood carving templates of Jesus and crosses.
I’m looking to be inspired, not to put faith in a fairy tale, or hand over responsibility to an imaginary entity. Is that too much to ask?
